Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering
Each December BCGV members join with the 1.3 million American Baptists around the world in giving to the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering. The offering is designed to permit ABC congregations and members a tangible means of honoring retired ministers and missionaries or their surviving spouses. In a true sense this offering lets Baptists everywhere acknowledge their gratitude for years of service by dedicated clergy members. The RMMO offering was first taken in 1978 and is sponsored and administered by the Ministers and Missionaries Benefit Board (MMBB), established 100 years ago for the betterment of the ministry, and maintains retirement and annuity programs for active and retired clergy and church employees.
As an example of how funds are distributed, RMMO raised $1,286,338 during the 2009 Christmas season. As a result MMBB distributed 3,341 Thank You checks to retired ABCUSA ministers, missionaries, their surviving spouses, and retired employees of ABC churches and related organizations. Dollars contributed by ABC churches are distributed 57% for annual Thank You checks to retired persons and their surviving spouses, and 38% for special emergency financial needs. Thank You checks are based upon years of service and the average check amounted to $288.51 in 2009.
