This summer we will spend our Summer Book Study reading Barbara Brown Taylor’s book “An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith.” Together, guided by scripture and Episcopal priest Barbara Brown Taylor, we will discover, explore, reflect on the presence of the Holy in the world around us.

An excerpt from the book jacket reads, “Taylor reveals meaningful ways to discover the sacred in the small things we do and see, from simple practices such as walking, working, and prayer. Something as ordinary as hanging clothes on a clothesline becomes an act of mediation if we pay attention to what we’re doing and take time to notice the sights, sounds, and smells around us. Making eye contact with the cashier at the grocery store becomes a moment of true human connection. Allowing yourself to get lost leads to new discoveries. As we incorporate these practices into our daily lives, we begin to discover altars everywhere we go, in nearly everything we do.”

The twelve chapters of the book will be condensed into nine weeks of study. Each Sunday, there will be a sermon on the current chapter and then a time of discussion and conversation on Wednesdays at 11:00am in the Scott Building’s Red Room.

A number of copies of the book are available from the church office during the week. There are also copies at local libraries, and an audio book can be found on Amazon. Reading the book is encouraged, but not required for participation in this summer series. All are welcome!
